    Wed, 27 Aug 2008 10:53:04 -0400
Bishop Hopkins gave the episcopal address at the North Central Jurisdictional Conference. It is an interesting look at the state of the church in this area. “We are in a time of great change, I would say crisis in the Midwest. … That crisis is globalization and the rapid change it is causing the Midwestern economy.” See [...]

I headed out to vote yesterday in the Florida primary. We had contests for a number of local offices. I’m registered with no party affiliation, but there was one non-partisan race that needed thinning out and one race that would be settled by the Republican primary. It was a fairly easy task [...]

"Why is it that a book that for its first readers was a word of comfort causes terror in us? Could it be that our place in the world and in society is very different from the position of those early Christians? Those churches in Asia looked upon the cataclysms announced in Revelation as a metaphor for their final vindication. It is difficult for us today to see things in the same light. Could it be that we have such an investment in the present order that we do not want it to pass away? Could it be

  • Moral Science Club >> Gary Thomas on The Shack
    Tue, 26 Aug 2008 12:23:00 -0400
Gary Thomas has an excellent review of the bestseller, The Shack by William P. Young. I speed-read it over coffee at Barnes and Noble, and didn't like it. "God" explains Himself to a middle-aged man by appearing as a Trinity of people at the man's shack in the woods. Thomas nails the problem of the premise on the head.

I like the God of my book, 13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird, who says, "I let the plane crash, now get over it!" The real God lifts us out of fretting over the temporal, and into

  • The Paranormal Pastor >> The Bible and the Paranormal Part 3: Cryptozoology
    Tue, 26 Aug 2008 11:32:00 -0400
I have mentioned it before, my view of approaching the Bible and any of its given subjects is first and foremost: Context. What exactly does the Bible say in its original language? What do the words mean in the original language? Say for example I wrote on a wall that lasts a few thousand years the phrase ?Color me blue?. What will people think about my meaning of that phrase two or three

    Tue, 26 Aug 2008 11:19:00 -0400
We're hearing more about "honor" killings these days, even in our own nation. Sadly, it's an act of fanaticism that has its roots in the Bible.

    Podcast version here

Deuteronomy 13:9 You must certainly put him to death. Your hand must be the first in putting him to death, and then the hands of all the people.

They call it ?honor killing,? although there?s nothing honorable about it. Young girls in the Middle East who get caught in the wrong company, or young men who convert

I have been meaning to write this for a while, but congrats Redeem Team on the gold. It was great to see all those incredible players playing as one and showing the world that they are the best. But credit has to go to the one who brought them together as one team, who made them make a three year commitment to practice and play as one, and who could bring all those egos under one roof and make one ego. The ONLY person who could do that is Coach Mike Krzyzewski (Coach K). It was amazing to listen to the

http://www.waynebrownministries.com (Reuters) - Artist Damien Hirst?s human skull encrusted with 8,601 diamonds will go on show at an Amsterdam museum in November. The artwork named ?For the Love of God? was unveiled last year at London?s White Cube gallery and later sold to an anonymous investment group. The skull fetched $100 million (54.5 million pounds), but it was a private transaction and the fact that Hirst was part of the group of investors who bought it raised questions about its true

  • The Pen of the Wayfarer >> Am I My Brother's Keeper? Final Thoughts on Todd Bentley

We can and should be distressed at the recent
events in Lakeland but they are indicative
of a larger problem that is pandemic throughout

The hard question we have to ask ourselves

Once again it is Tuesday, and I have something positive to say about someone who has been encouraging to me.

My buddy Joe is one of those guys everyone should meet. Joe's the guy that got me to be serious about what being a follower of Christ means.

Joe is the kind of guy that really shows faith, commitment, and trust in God. His life, and he's family, center on service to God and listening to and following what He has planned.

    With Joe's help and encouragement,

This past Sunday we sang the Keith Green worship song “Oh Lord, You’re Beautiful.” Our worship space is pretty acoustically active, and we are blessed with many men, women, and children who love to sing, and who sing well, and I confess I got goosebumps at one point. “Oh Lord, You’re Beautiful” is a simple [...]
  • New Epistles >> The NLT Study Bible by Tyndale House

Three weeks ago, I received in the mail an advanced copy of the NLT Study Bible (NLTSB) from Tyndale House Publishers to review and have finally gotten around to writing this review. The NLTSB is scheduled for official release on September 15, 2008 and I'm sure many people will be impressed by it. I have found it to be an excellent study bible. Any time now in August, the NLT Study Bible website will be launching a fully searchable online version of the study bible with a free 30-day trial.
  • New Epistles >> Whitehorse, Yukon: the most northern parts of Canada
    Tue, 26 Aug 2008 03:48:00 -0400

I have been away from blogging for over 2 weeks and I loved it. I have been away at a bible camp doing some speaking, and also returned from the Yukon, which is located way up north next to Alaska. Yes, Saskatoon, SK, Canada is north, but Whitehorse, Yukon is even further up north. I can say that this is the furthest north I have ever been. I was up there for a national youth gathering of about 1,200 youths from across Canada.

I also took some pictures of the travels through

There is a big problem with ?Doing what is right in the eyes?. As Proverbs 21:2 says Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts. (KJV) That means what ever you do it is right in your eyes. It only makes sense because if you thought you [...]

I tend to stay away from posts like the one I'm about to write (or try to anyway). I feel like "updates" are rarely more than filler posts, but since I haven't had much in the way of any posts at all lately, I figure it's better than nothing. I am starting a new (and hopefully my last) semester at DTS, and it looks to be a relatively easy one. Mon, 25 Aug 2008 11:17:00 -0400
This was a response to a question over at Conversations at the Edge on "Character or Faith; Which is Better?" Would Jesus accept an athiest of good character, or a person of bad character but of faith.

The atheist with good character is first, not a narcissist. I?ve known several people like this. He/she lets themselves be guided by the goodness that hangs above man?s narcissistic existence, particularly in nature. Romans 1 and Psalm 19 touches upon this truth.

    Jesus said we can judge

What I mean by Moderate Christian Theology

By "moderate Christian theology" I mean the doctrinal views of those who are moderate, relaxed, and open in how they deal with the world, but who take the Christian religion and Christian spirituality seriously. They will have an interest in the Bible, but will not be dogmatic and will also be interested in interfaith dialog and will not pressure their neighbors. Their primary form of witness is by their life, but they do not hide the fact that they are Christians. They let their light shine through deeds first, then words, and even through signs.
